Peter Cvik: You are the axis of time

18 May - 22 June 2024
Overview

Peter Cvik's exhibitionYou are the axis of time delves into the intricate relationship between memory, perception, and the fluidity of time. Viewers are invited to embark on a journey of exploration and introspection, navigating the dynamic intersection between the tangible and the abstract.

Central to Cvik’s work is his exploration of visual memory. His landscapes aren't merely depictions of physical locations but psychological topographies constructed from memory. He starts by painting minimal graphic lines reminiscent of architectural structures, progressively building complex layers of color and shapes found in his memory. His manipulation of depth and flatness disorientate and challenge our perception and understanding of the scene. His compositions are both abstract, yet recognizable – where tangible elements fade into the background or are interrupted by sweeps of paint, reminiscent of memories fading over time.

In this latest exhibition, Cvik has begun to introduce traces of the human figure in his work. He starts with subtle observations of shapes and brushstrokes where he recognizes that certain elements already hint at human forms on a subconscious level. He then starts to sketch figures more directly, repeatedly erasing and redrawing them, creating subtle indications of human presence. These figures, referred to by Cvik as ‘ghosts’ or ‘mute inhabitants,’ are intended to be discovered within his work without dominating the narrative, adding depth to scenes that previously only focused on architecture, urbanism, and nature.
